Mentality in the gym…….why it matters

Today’s blog post is by our “Featured Coach” Anthony Stingl, an online coach and competitive bodybuilder from Wales in the UK.

When people think of training, they think of their body but usually forget that the most important part of a successful workout is your mind, for example,

If you spent your entire workout on your phone, distracted by random things and not focusing on what you’re doing, you’re not going to come out with a good session.

However if you go in focused and block out all those distractions, focus on every rep until you’re finished, it’ll be a much more successful and productive workout.

As well as benefiting from a better workout, a focused, clear mind can help you achieve more reps, this is because a lot of people pick up a barbell/dumbbell and immediately start to doubt themselves or are worried they’ll injure them self, so they hesitate or cut their set short. Simply doubting yourself for a second while doing a bench press will make you want to put it down and stop even though you can still lift it.

I personally always think “keep going” constantly so that I don’t give myself any time to think of a negative thought, I always find that I can achieve more reps by doing it, not because it gives me extra strength, but because I’m not hesitating and so training the muscle properly.
